2024 Carved-Top Mandola:
Why Carved-Top?
The carved-top instrument provides a better separation of tones, a more percussive, responsive, and often louder instrument. I believe that the main reason is the increased pressure of the bridge on the top due to the steeper angle of the strings. This is only one factor among many.
Design, Aesthetics, and Playability
Making a carved top is labor-intensive compared to the flat top and will be reflected in the price. The same can be said about the carved back, I’m not sure the carved back adds much to the overall sound. The traditional French polish finish (rubbed shellac) while not as shiny as a modern finish, provides the best acoustic and enhances the natural beauty of the wood. The relatively short scale length of 16 inches (406mm) makes playing the Mandola easier, while the 0 fret nut and 29mm nut add to the low action at the 12th fret further enhancing the playability of this instrument.
